A few years back Microsoft launched into a new innovative area of PC computing when it introduced the Microsoft Surface. It was basically a table with an ultra-cool touch screen built in. People could then be sitting around a table interacting with this computer making the whole experience enjoyable and intuitive. Now Microsoft has released the Microsoft Surface 2 taking the concept to a whole new level!

There is one difference that is noticeable with off the bat. The first Microsoft Surface was quite a bit thicker, almost a whole box underneath the table. This was because they needed cameras to detect touch. The new Microsoft Surface 2 is only 4 inches thin with a dual-core Windows 7 computer inside. They’re able to pull it off because of Pixel Sense, a new technology created by Microsoft. Basically there are infrared sensors all throughout the screen so each pixel is actually acts as a camera. This allows the screen to actually “see” objects as they touch it.

Every comic book fan has pretended to be Superman at one point or another, but students at the University of Amsterdam have taken the fantasy one step further with a first-person simulator that makes you feel like the Man of Steel.

The students used a hacked Kinect sensor to map body movements to a Superman character model. XIM3 decided to change this for Xbox 360 gamer by releasing their adaptor.
That's right using thi adaptor enables you to plug in your keyboard and mouse to your Xbox and actaully be as awesome as PC gamers are. It trades coomands real-time so don't worry about the lag between your keyboard, mouse and your Xbox. Stupid Xbox still thinks you are using a joypad.

Ofcourse this thing isn't cheap expect to pay 149.99$ for this baby, but it's probably the best option if you want keyboard and mouse on your Xbox right now.

This is not ideal, since the toxic smoke from indoor cooking fires kills 1.6 million people per year while wafting up into the atmosphere where it does all kinds of other bad stuff (in total, it’s about 50% of the nastiness of CO2 when it comes to climate change).
You don’t! What you do care about (maybe) is sweet camping gear. The BioLite stove is portable, efficient, and powerful. It burns pretty much anything you care to toss into it, uses only half as much fuel as a regular fire, and boils water significantly faster than a conventional petroleum fuel camp stove. The reason that we’re posting about it, though, is that what makes the stove perform so well is an attached thermoelectric generator. The generator uses heat from the fire to power a small fan that improves combustion efficiency by blowing air back into the stove, and there’s enough energy left over (1-2 watts) to charge portable electronics through a USB port.

The BioLite camp stove is a bit bulkier than some other camp stoves and weighs a pound and a half, but you don’t have to carry fuel, and unless you’re camping in the arctic, you probably won’t run out of stuff to burn.

In today's world of high-tech portable gadgets, iPods and cell phones, we've become dependent upon readily accessible electric outlets to power our devices and charge our batteries. But now researchers at the University of Washingtonhave discovered nature's alternative to the power outlet: living trees.

That's right, living trees. UW engineers Babak Parviz and Brian Otis have invented an electrical device that can be plugged directly into any tree for power. "As far as we know this is the first peer-reviewed paper of someone powering something entirely by sticking electrodes into a tree," said Parviz.

The research was based upon a breakthrough study last year out of MIT, when scientists found that plants generate a voltage of up to 200 millivolts when one electrode is placed in a plant and the other in the surrounding soil. Those researchers are already designing devices which act as forest sensors powered entirely by this new method. But until now, no one has applied these findings to the development of tree power.

It all began last summer with UW undergraduate student Carlton Himes (also the study's co-author). He spent his summer wandering around the woods surrounding campus, hooking nails to bigleaf maple trees and connecting them to his voltmeter. Sure enough, the trees registered a steady voltage of up to a few hundred millivolts.

The next step for the UW team was to build a circuit to run on the available tree power. Because the voltage generated by the trees can be so small, the resulting device -- a boost converter -- was specialized to take input voltages of as little as 20 millivolts to be stored to produce greater output. The device's produced output voltage ended up being 1.1 volts, which is enough to run low-power sensors.

Of course, the researchers were quick to point out that the technology is still a long way off from being able to power normal electronics. "Normal electronics are not going to run on the types of voltages and currents that we get out of a tree," Parviz said.

At the very least, these findings open the door for new generations of electronics which might eventually be efficient enough to take advantage of tree power. It certainly excites the imagination. Maybe in time we'll be witness to weekend picnickers lounging in local parks with their iPods and cell phones plugged into the surrounding foliage.

source
Plansetashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17667185328145612742noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7570985744252254992.post-49043200656467436652011-02-03T23:14:00.000-08:002011-02-14T03:13:40.493-08:00Dominoes fall via wireless tech(Video)

Probably most of us love the look of falling dominoes. But these new hi-tech wireless dominoes take it to the whole new level.
They interact with each other using wireless technology and can topple each other without even touching.
Each domino have number assigned to them so then they fall they trigger the next one to fall and so on.
They don't really look like like the classical dominoes with all those lights that indicate their number(which looks pretty cool in my oppinion).
This technology also allows multiple dominoes to fall at the same time (If they have the same number) which is pretty awesome.
I don't know if they are going into mass production someday, but i sure hope so.
around the targets you’re supposed to be shooting at. The photodiode in the Zapper
detects the change in light intensity and tells the computer that it’s pointed at a lit target
multiple targets, a white block is drawn around each potential target one at a time.
The diode’s reception of light combined with the sequence of the drawing of the targets
For Intel, $1 billionINTEL says it has found a design flaw in one of its recently released computer chips and is working with laptop makers to replace affected computers.

Sales lost while the company rushes out a replacement chip, and the cost of replacing computers with the flawed chip, will cost the company $US1 billion ($1 billion), it said.

Intel said it had shipped 8 million of the defective chips, but computers using the chips had only been on sale since January 9, so "relatively few" of them reached consumers.

The main processing chips in these computers are branded "Core i5" and "Core i7".

The affected chips aren't the main processors — which are based on the so-called "Sandy Bridge" technology that Intel announced in January — but a support chip.

The flaw means the chip may degrade with use over a period of months or years, slowing down the transfer of data to and from the computer's hard drives and DVD drives.

Intel said consumers could "continue to use their systems with confidence, while working with their computer manufacturer for a permanent solution".

Intel shares slid 25 cents to $US21.21 in early afternoon trading.

The Santa Clara, California, company said it had already started making a new version of the support chip, and hoped to start delivering it to computer-makers in late February.

Production of computers using Intel's "Sandy Bridge" chips will be on hold in the meantime.

Intel said it expected the delay to reduce revenue by about $US300 million in the first quarter. It put the repair and replacement cost at $US700 million.

Despite the setback, Intel raised its overall revenue outlook for the first quarter because of the recent acquisition of the phone-chip business of Infineon Technologies AG. It also expects to complete the acquisition of McAfee by the end of the first quarter.
